How to pollution-proof your baby’s skin

The secret to anti-pollution baby skincare

Do you worry about the effect of pollution on your baby? Do you shudder at the thought of what those toxic chemicals will do to your little one’s health?

Here in Australia, where we grow our natural ingredients under wide open blue skies and fresh air, it’s hard to comprehend the impact of pollution in Asia.

However, many of our customers in Asia tell me about their fears around pollution. Their children wear face masks outside on high-smog days. They tell me outdoor activities in schools are often cancelled due to health concerns.

These parents are well informed about the dangers – and they are alarmed. And I can understand why, because their fears are backed up by research.

In China, severe air pollution has been linked to serious respiratory diseases, and even linked with birth defects.

Face masks and air purifiers can help with our little ones’ developing lungs, but what about their delicate skin? Your baby’s skin drinks in the surrounding air.

The impact of air pollution on your baby’s skin

Air pollution damages skin for two key reasons:

  1. The microscopic particles: the tiny particles of toxic pollutants are up to 20 times smaller than your baby’s pores. This means they can easily get through the outer protective layers of the epidermis, and get right inside the skin.

This causes the skin’s deep tissue to become inflamed and damaged, and reduces your baby’s skin’s ability to regenerate, heal and grow.

  1. Free radicals: when pollutants interact with your baby’s skin, it can create free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause damage to cells.

In short, free radicals are molecules which are missing an electron. (Do you remember your school science? Molecules are groups of atoms, which must contain a nucleus, protons and electrons.)

So these free radicals try to steal electrons from the molecule next to them, which in turn become unstable and damaged. Then those molecules try to rob the molecule next to them, and so on and so on. It’s called “oxidative stress”.

It can dramatically alter the cell’s structure and function, and even change the instructions in the cell’s DNA.

What you can do to protect your baby’s skin from pollution

Your best weapon against pollution-generated free radicals is antioxidants.

Antioxidants have been proven to fight free radical damage, stopping them from reacting with the skin.

Antioxidants are “electron donors”. Remember those missing electrons? Antioxidants give electrons to the free radicals. This stabilises them, so they don’t cause further damage to the cells.

One of most powerful antioxidants is Vitamin C. It not only neutralises free radicals with its antioxidant properties, but is also essential for the creation of skin collagen.

How to protect your little one’s skin with antioxidants

You can apply antioxidants to your baby’s skin through organic baby skincare that’s naturally high in antioxidants.

We have formulated our baby skincare range to be super rich with antioxidants. It’s extremely powerful, yet exceptionally gentle.

We’ve achieved this by using two amazing botanicals which are just being discovered by the skincare world. These are Kakadu Plum and Quandong – a wild plum and a wild peach native to the Australian outback.

Kakadu Plum: incredible antioxidants

Kakadu Plum is the highest source of antioxidants ever measured. It’s 1,333 per cent higher in antioxidants than the blueberry.

It offers both water- and oil-soluble antioxidants, making it ideal for skincare. It’s also full of vitamin E, zinc, magnesium and calcium – which help promote healthy skin.

Kakadu Plum is also the highest source of vitamin C on the planet. It has more than 100 times the vitamin C of oranges.

This powerful wild fruit also contains phytochemicals, which are chemicals that occur naturally in plants. Two of these phytochemicals, gallic acid and ellagic acid provide anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties that help keep your baby’s skin healthy.

Quandong: antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory

Quandong, a wild peach, is the second highest source of antioxidants on the planet, coming a close second behind Kakadu Plum.

It’s twice as high in Vitamin C as oranges, and is also high in vitamin E, folate, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc.

Plus, Quandong contains Rutin, a strong antioxidant which works well with vitamin C to repair skin cells and strengthen the skin.

Quandong has both anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties that help nourish, protect and soothe your baby’s skin.

Other antioxidant-rich ingredients in Lovekins baby skincare

Other superfoods in our baby skincare range that are high in antioxidants include:

White tea: with more antioxidants than green or black tea, white tea promotes healthy skin and helps repair and heal damaged skin. White tea is a potent yet still-rare ingredient. It can only be hand picked during a few days of early spring and has to be handled with care.

Coconut oil: most people think of coconut oil in terms of its hydrating effect, but it’s actually high in antioxidants. Even more importantly, coconut oil can help the body absorb more antioxidants.

Lemon myrtle: another botanical native to Australia, lemon myrtle is high in antioxidants and high in citral, a phytochemical which helps detoxify cells.
