5 fascinating reasons why quandong is the next big skincare phenomenon

Never heard of quandong? You’re not alone.

Many of our new customers are at first bemused to learn that we use quandong in our natural baby skincare products. Firstly, they’ve often never heard of it. Secondly, if they have they associate it more with the edible fruit – often used in bush recipes such as jams and pies.

Quandong might be a new product for us, but it’s been used for millennia by various aboriginal tribes.

And its popularity is skyrocketing. Word is getting out about quandong’s amazing healing properties and nutritional value.

Quandong is a key ingredient in four Lovekins products: baby moisturiser, baby hair and body wash, baby nappy cream and baby sunscreen.

Find out more about what quandong is, why it’s so good for baby skincare products – and get a bonus recipe at the end of this blog!

What is quandong anyway?

The quandong is like a wild bush peach. It’s native to desert regions of central and southern Australia.

Its various Aboriginal names include bidjigal, beeticul, dumbari, gudi gudi, gutchu, guandang, jawirli, qandang, quandong, mangata, walku, wanga, wongil, wajanu and wayanu. Quandong is part of the Sandalwood family, and the scientific Latin name is santalum acuminatum.

It has a strong flavour a bit like a peach or apricot mixed with rhubarb.

Quandong was a staple food for the Pitjantjatjara people for over 50,000 years. They ate the fruit and used the leaves and bark for medicinal purposes. They harvested and dried the fruit and used the crushed kernels as an alternative for meat. The kernels are 25% protein and 70% complex oils.

Here are 5 surprising health benefits of quandong which make it ideal for use in baby skincare products:

1. Antioxidants

Quandong is super high in antioxidants. In fact it’s the second- highest antioxidant fruit ever measured. The highest is kakadu plum (another core ingredient in Lovekins natural baby skincare range).

Antioxidants are important for skincare because they fight free radicals. These are  unstable chemical particles which cause skin damage.

2. Vitamin C

Quandong contains twice the vitamin C of oranges. [click to tweet with #quandong #superfood #babyskincare] Vitamin C is essential for the growth of healthy skin. It’s scientifically proven to help heal many skin conditions and protect skin from damage. It’s a natural antihistamine, which helps reduce the itching caused by baby skin conditions such as eczema.

3. Rutin

Quandong is high in Rutin. This is a strong antioxidant which works particularly well in partnership with Vitamin C. Rutin intensifies the antioxidant power of Vitamin C. It’s also a great anti-inflammatory, ideal for babies with sensitive skin. What’s more, rutin is shown to strengthen your baby’s skin capillaries.

4. Vitamin E and minerals

Quandong is a rich source of source of Vitamin E, folate, magnesium and calcium. Vitamin E is a powerful nutrient which protects your baby’s skin by fighting free radicals. It also protects skin from the elements, helps reduce inflammation and provides excellent skin hydration.

5. Phenolic acids

Quandong extract contains phenolic acids. These give the skin anti-microbial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The way phenolic acids work on the skin is similar to a gentle alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA).
